Turn or Burn

My world has been rocked this week.  I found out about a scandal at my workplace.  It is really bothering me.  If the allegations are true, this individual did some pretty “Immoral” stuff.

This is my question:  Do we have to have a God to behave morally?  It seems to me that morality and spirituality are always tethered to the same thought.  But should they be?  If the past decades have taught us nothing it should be that Spiritual leaders can do very immoral things.

But what about the reverse?

Do you have to be spiritual or even believe in a god to be moral?  I think most people would say no…but deep down I think we are comforted by the notion of hell to keep would be lawbreakers from crossing the line.

I am outraged at this colleague not because he has offended my faith, but because he has offended my humanity.  We have all agreed to behave a certain way.  There is a handbook.  I may not agree with every rule, but I will follow them or willingly face the consequences.

If there is no threat of hell or even the terrestrial prison, should we act in a moral way?  The answer would seem to be obvious.  But if you listen to some Christians, without god we would all revert to our most base animal natures.  I don’t buy it.

Do the right thing.  DO THE RIGHT THING!

  1. I don’t think you need to believe in God or any god to be moral. It’s in us to “do the right thing”. I think God can help you do the right thing and can sustain you when it gets tough.
